Well, then I'd go to these punk shows ... you're shoulder to shoulder with your people.” What connects ceremony, community, and the punk rock pit? Continuing Punkast's guest-hosted conversations highlighting Indigenous creativity and music, Kristy Martinez speaks with Gabe Colhoff of 1876, the Portland-based Indigenous punk band bringing powwow drums, traditional languages, ska, hip-hop, and punk together. From growing up with Northern Cheyenne ceremony and discovering the political roots of two-tone ska to creating the Pow Wow Punk Rock EPs during the pandemic, Gabe shares the musical influences, family relationships, and experiences that shaped 1876, which represents the Northern Cheyenne, Blackfeet, Comanche, Kanaka Maoli, Pikanii, Siksika, and Tsitsitsas nations. They discuss the women honored through the band's album artwork, the song “Nississa” (featuring Kristy!), Indigenous representation, gatekeeping within punk, touring across Turtle Island, and the responsibilities that come with speaking out. There's plenty of music, community, humor, and punk politics in this one! Gabe Colhoff of 1876 Northern Cheyenne · Blackfeet (Pow Wow Punk Rock) Guest hosted, produced, and edited by Kristy Martinez.
